Grey Cup Week

Last Week, we did many different activities for the Grey Cup to get excited.

Our poem of the week was "Green is the Colour, Football is the Game." We are now very good at singing the WHOLE song. We learned how companies use different ways to advertise. We chose to advertise the Grey Cup with posters (Check them out at Conferences! :) ). We had a Rider picture on the board where we brainstormed different nouns, verbs and adjectives. During Daily 5, in Word Work, we wrote down some of the words in alphabetical order and then made sentences with them. One of the days we dressed up in Rider gear and took photos at our school's Rider Photo Booth. We made and presented poems and chants with our grade 8 reading buddies. To end off the week before the Grey Cup, we had a Grey Cup Celebration assembly. We watched videos, looked at pictures and saw Mr. Williams and Mr. Lockert have a competition to see who was better for the "Saskatchewan Roughrider Team."

AND OUR EXCITEMENT GOT EVEN BIGGER WHENNNNNNNN ........ THE RIDERS WON THE GREY CUP!!!!!

Operation Christmas Child

Our class will be putting  boxes together for Operation Christmas Child this year.  If you do not know what Operation Christmas Child is, here is a link to tell you more about it.
Operation Christmas Child

In December, our `Million Acts of Friendship` theme is Just Be Generous.  I know it is only November but I thought this would be a great opportunity for our class.  We put the boxes together near the end of November, so its close to December. :)

I will give you more information over the next couple days but would like to do a poll to see what parents are interested in when it comes to putting boxes together.

In what way would you like your child to participate in putting together boxes with our classroom ?
Thank you for your input. Ms. Johnson

Just Be Generous

My mom shaved her head because it was a promise to her team mates.  If they raised over 10,000 dollars for the Breast Cancer Run she would shave her head.  They raised 16,000 dollars and everyone is really proud of themselves.  They didn't think that they could do it but they did.
With my family, I raised 2,000 dollars.  Here is a link to the video of Global News last night where my mom shaved her head.

I am proud of my mom and every one who was involved with it.

Pumpkin Hollow Extreme

Yesterday, the Grade 1's, 1/2's and 2/3's (us!) went to Pumpkin Hollow.  We took a big, yellow bus outside the city near Lumsden.  When we got there we got off our big, yellow bus and walked across the bridge to the Corn Maze.  We didn't all fit into the corn maze so some of us took a trip around the corn maze on a big, green tractor.

In the corn maze, we got lost.  We had to find different numbers with trivia to find our way to the exit.  We started as one big group but turned into lots of tiny  groups by the end.  As soon as we saw the exit sign, we were so happy that we could finally get out because we were lost and tired. One group went through the maze 4 times, I think they got the hang of it by the end.  (James had a secret to get through it.)

When we got out of the corn maze there were a few different activities we could do.  There was the jumping pillow, the cow train, the nature hike and the kiddie corral.  We got to go in groups on the jumping pillow, it was a lot of fun.  For some of us it was our favourite.  At the kiddie corral, we found a cat.  It liked all of us.  He let us pet him because he wanted to be loved.  We saw goats, pigs and ponies.  We got to pet some of them.  There was a play structure and some horse swings we got to play on.

At the end of our trip we went to the Country Store and got our pictures taken inside.  We climbed back on to the big, yellow bus in time for us to get back to the school to eat lunch.  A few of us enjoyed a quick snooze on the big, yellow bus.

Pumpkin Hollow was so awesome!

Back to School

We are really happy to be back at school because it is really fun.  We are happy to see our new teacher and our school friends.  We never knew what our classroom was going to look like but we see it and notice our lockers are blue and that Ms. Johnson likes it with natural light.  Now we see our classroom we think it looks better than we thought it would.

Some of the students who are in grade 3 were in Grade 2 last year in Ms. Johnson`s class.  They had a lot of fun last year and think they will have a lot of fun this year.  Last year, we went on lots of field trips so I hope we go on lots again!

Parent Information

Welcome back to school!  I trust you had a good summer with some time to relax.  I look forward to getting to know all of you as we work together to make this a great year.  For some of you it is a familiar face and I am excited to get to work with you again.

General School and Classroom Behaviour

Each student is expected to:
-         treat others with respect.
-         be responsible for his/her actions in the classroom and on the playground.
-         try their very best in everything they do!
-         come to school on time, prepared, and ready to learn.

Agendas

Please send to school $4.50 for the agendas.  Agendas are an important means of communication between school and home.  Any notes, money, messages, or permission slips can be sent in the front pocket.  Please check and sign the agenda every day to ensure our communication is up to date.
Homework
In the classroom, we use RAZ-KIDZ.  I also strongly encourage the students to try and go on it at home.
Students are given ample time in class to complete their daily work.  If they are unable to complete their work in class, they may be asked to stay in at recess to finish it, or take it to finish at home.

Class Dojo
Class Dojo is a behavioural system that I have in place in my classroom.  Students can receive points for their behaviour in class, helping others and working hard.  They can also receive bonus points for going on RAZ KIDS at home and getting their agenda signed.  Students can access this program online at home and parents can also have their own log in to check in on their child’s progress.

Communication
I have an APP to send reminders for different forms, trips, and school days.  If you would like to subscribe to our classroom you can send a text you (438)793-3109 with the message @bfd3d0.  If you would like to subscribe via email you can send an email to bfd3d0@mail.remind.101.com.  You can also keep up to date with things that are happening in our classroom on our blog: http://www.msjohnson23.blogspot.com

Parent Helpers

If you would like to join the class on a fieldtrip or help out in the classroom, Regina Public Schools requires you to have a criminal record check completed.  You can pick up a criminal record check form in the school office.  There is no cost to you when the check is done for volunteering purposes.  Thank you in advance for offering to help out!

Parental Involvement

How can you help your child reach their potential?
-         Help your child use the agenda on a daily basis.
-         Help your child read 15-20 minutes each day.
-         Encourage a positive attitude toward school and classmates.

Your child is important to me, so if you have any questions during the year, please feel free to contact me through the agenda, by phone at 791-8623 or by email at holly.johnson@rbe.sk.ca .  I would also like to know the best way for me and others parents from the class to get a hold of you.  Please let me know your preferred method of contact (phone, cell, email).  I look forward to working together with you as we figure out how to best help your child grow and learn.

Sincerely,
        Holly Johnson
